What is root canal or endodontic treatment (RCT)?
The root canal treatment is a dental procedure where the tooth can be saved by removing the pulp of the tooth and filling it with an inert material. This is normally done when the tooth can neither be filled nor restored by any other means and this is because the decay has reached the tooth pulp (nerve).
What are the signs that necessitate Root Canal Treatment?
The following are the signs that necessitate RCT.
- Discoloration of the tooth
- Draining sinus (pus discharge).
- Increased sensitivity to heat or cold.
- Pain
- Tenderness to chewing and touch
- No visible symptoms at times
What are the steps involved in RCT?
The steps involved are as follows.
- An opening is made in the tooth crown and using mini files the pulp chamber and root canals are cleaned and shaped.
- The root canals are filled with a biocompatible material such as “gutta-percha.”
- To protect the tooth, crown is placed, after which the tooth becomes fully functional.
- In case the tooth does not have the structure to hold the restoration in position, a post is placed inside the tooth.
